Milah H. Hooper

I am a self-taught artist from Miami, Florida making works that could perhaps be described as Art Brut, Outsider Art or Naiive Art.
Some of my subject matter is of animals facing challenges because of environmental degradation. Most of my work is playful, recognizing that we shouldn’t take ourselves too seriously.
Modern art is a definite influence. In particular, Picasso’s paintings influence how I represent animals. Other influences include Dubuffet and Basquiat. A lot of the work I do uses repurposed or recycled materials like found wood, housepaints, and discarded metal.
I make art as a contribution to humankind’s collective creativity. When I am creating, I feel like I am doing something positive and offsetting some of the negative effects of living in this material world. I want to be part of of the creative process as opposed to being part of the destructive process.
