Democracy in Florida: A Work in Progress

We are excited to welcome back to the Matheson Dr. Steve Noll. His presentation “Democracy in Florida: A Work in Progress” is a companion program to the “Voices and Votes: Alachua County” exhibit and the Smithsonian traveling exhibit – “Voices and Votes: Democracy in America,’ which was on display at the Matheson this summer.

Starting in Spanish colonial Florida, Dr. Noll will look at how the actions of political leaders and grass-roots activists have worked to increase the ideas and notions of democracy, a continuing process. Dr. Noll will examine the slow growth of democracy in Florida, as individuals and groups fought (and are still fighting) to be included in the body politic.
